JPII senior girls volleyball team takes silver at regionals

The John Paul II Collegiate senior girls volleyball team finished with a silver medal at the 4A Regionals in Humboldt over the weekend.

Coach Vic Stynsky said the girls played great throughout the weekend only dropping a match to the eventual winners in the final.

“We played very well; we won all of our matches and made it to the final. We went to three games against Meadow Lake and lost 15-13 in the third game. We went there hoping to do well and to qualify for provincials and we did that so we are proud of what we accomplished so far this year,” he said.

The regional tournament had a few teams that the JPII girls were familiar with but also a few teams that were unknowns. Stynsky said they came into the tournament expecting to do well.

“Coming into the tournament there were a couple teams we hadn’t seen before so we were unsure about those teams. We were confident, the teams we had seen there we had success against. We thought that if we played to our level that things would work out and we would qualify for provincials and that’s what played out,” he said.

Stynsky said the keys to the team’s success at the tournament, and throughout the season, are their camaraderie and resilience.

“This year our teamwork and the ability to not get down [on ourselves], if we lose one set to come back and pick our game back up the next set. If we lose a match we refocus and get our game back for the next match. The girls have really gelled together and work as a team. If someone isn’t having their best game someone else can jump in and pick it up. We can all band together and play our best,” he said.

The team will have their eyes on a provincial championship this weekend when the travel to Fort Qu’Appelle for the 4A provincials. Stynsky said his message to the team has been to focus on the game at hand and not to get too caught up in big picture.

“Our message coming into this weekend is the same as the rest of the year is to just take one match at a time. We will just be looking to play our best and I think if we do that we will find success. I know the girls will give their best effort and that is all that you can ask,” he said.
