Town paves the way for land purchase at former Old Government House site

There will now be no uncertain future for a stretch of land that connects the historical site of the Old Government House and Battleford Industrial School ruins to the Saskatchewan Land Surveyors’ Association Museum.

Battleford lawmakers approved the town’s subdivision application related to the chunk of land in question during Monday’s council meeting so the town can proceed to purchase the land owned by the Missionary Oblates of St. Mary’s Province as previously agreed upon.

“The parcel of land the town is buying connects to the land the town already owns,” Mayor Ames Leslie said after the meeting. “It completes the section up there, and also ties into the land titles building, which presently the Land Surveyors’ Association is using as a museum. It just ties everything together nicely.”

As discussed at council’s July 15 meeting, the town agreed to purchase roughly eight acres of land, located between the two properties, which the Oblates are selling for $75,000.

The town agreed to preserve the site as a cultural institution and place of worship, specified within the community service district.

By purchasing the land connecting the two historic sites, the town can make sure no one else buys it and uses it for development.
