Whether it is carving your own pumpkin or donning a creative costume for a dance night, families looking to get a head start on Halloween festivities can do just that at the Western Development Museum in North Battleford on Oct. 25 and 26.

Organizers are planning the second annual pumpkin-carving class from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday.

Participants will need to register by Oct. 23 to take part. The event itself is open to everyone. Children aged 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

“We supply the instructor, all the tools and the pumpkins,” Programs and Volunteer Coordinator Cheryl Stewart-Rahm said.

The workshop leader will offer tips on making what promises to be an impressive-looking decorative pumpkin.

Participants have the option to take their completed pumpkins home following the event, or leave them at the museum to enter the pumpkin-carving competition Saturday.

“It’s a lot of work but it’s a lot of fun as well,” Stewart-Rahm said.

Then, on Saturday the WDM will host its Great Pumpkin Masquerade and Family Dance from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. No pre-registration is required for the dance night.

“Everybody comes in a Halloween costume,” Stewart-Rahm said, adding the music for the dance will have a Halloween theme as well. “It is absolutely a great evening.”

The family dance also includes a costume parade, prizes, and games and crafts for the kids as well.

The WDM has hosted the long-standing tradition since 1996.

“It’s been a really successful event, and well attended,” Stewart- Rahm said.

The evening’s activities include a junior haunted house for some spooky fun.

There are also costume contests each hour starting at 6 p.m.

The event includes a concession area with Halloween-themed snacks.

Attendance to both the pumpkin-carving evening and the family dance night events is by regular museum admission.
