Conservative incumbent Cathay Wagantall was the clear winner in Monday’s federal election.

Wagantall returns to Ottawa after receiving 28, 885 votes, garnering 76.5 per cent support.

Carter Antoine of the NDP took second place with 12.1 per cent support with 4,528 votes.

The Liberal Party’s Connor Moen finished third with 2,341 votes. Stacey Wiebe of the Green Party came in fourth with 1,009 votes. People’s Party candidate Ryan Schultz finished last place with 891 votes.

Wagantall was first elected in the riding in the previous election in 2015, with over 59 per cent of the vote.

She was named the Conservative representative after the retirement of long-time MP Garry Breitkreuz, who won in the riding as a Conservative, Alliance, and Reform candidate in elections in 2011, 2008, 2006, 2004, 2000, 1997 and 1993.

Prior to Breitkreuz’ election in 1993, the riding was firmly in the hands of the New Democratic Party.

Lorne Nystrom held the riding for the NDP from 1968 to 1993, winning in seven consecutive elections.

The Yorkton-Melville riding encompasses a number of local communities, including Porcupine Plain, Hudson Bay, Naicam, and St. Brieux among others.
