North Battleford lawmakers put brakes on speeders at Territorial Dr. intersection

Those driving on Territorial Dr. where it meets Clements Dr. are being asked to remember to slow down to 50 km/h and honour the speed limit.

North Battleford City Hall plans to install a traffic calming device at the intersection to remind drivers to reduce their speed.

Council heard at its meeting Monday how some people are driving 80 km/h in the area, even though the posted speed limit is 50.

Mayor Ryan Bater said crews will set up a mobile unit with flashing lights that will display approaching vehicles’ speeds so drivers will know to slow down.

“We’re going to put [the device] there for a while and see if that makes a difference,” Bater said after the meeting.

The resident who submitted the letter was particularly worried about people’s safety as there is a pedestrian crosswalk at the location. He wrote that westbound vehicles are traveling down a hill before they approach the intersection and tend to maintain the same speed of close to 80 km/h rather than slow down to 50. Vehicles heading east begin to increase to 80 before the higher speed-limit sign is posted east of the intersection, he wrote.

The mayor is aware vehicles often travel too fast on this section of road and made note that Territorial Dr. is actually part of the provincial highway system.

“The rest of Territorial until it gets to Sakewew High School is 80 kilometres an hour. A lot of motorists will be coming around the corner and perhaps won’t realize it [changes to] 50 kilometres an hour,” Bater said.

The city may look at installing a permanent sign in the future that also displays vehicles’ speeds and flashes if any exceed the limit, Bater said.
