Chamber to host small business week info sessions focused on taxation

Oct 15, 2019 | 2:21 PM

The Chamber of Commerce will serve up some tax tips to businesses next week in its Taxes Over Breakfast information sessions from Oct. 23 to 25 to celebrate Small Business Week.

“The topics are related to commercial taxation – all the different component parts of what makes up in the end the taxation bill for a commercial venture,” COO Linda Machniak said.

On the first day, the Saskatchewan Assessment Management Agency local regional manager Chandra Reilly will give a presentation focused on the assessment cycle. Reilly will discuss the appeals process on the second day of the event.

On the last day of the meetings, Battleford Finance Director David Gillan will offer a presentation on what is involved when the municipality prepares its budget. Gillan is a former finance director for the City of North Battleford.

Machniak said Gillan will outline the budget-making process itself and discuss the tools municipalities have at their disposal and how they come to determine who is paying how much and what that tax bill will look like in the end.

The sessions are open to any businesses that wish to attend.

“If there was a business person that had a question about taxation or wanted to understand it, we certainly would welcome them,” Machniak said, adding the event is not likely something a resident would want to participate in as it will focus on commercial taxation more extensively.

The sessions take place in the meeting room at The Comfort Inn and Suites in North Battleford from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Those wishing to attend must must contact the chamber to register and purchase their tickets.
