Town gets down to planning for 2020 budget

Oct 8, 2019 | 10:30 AM

The Town of Battleford is already starting to make plans to prepare for its new budget for the 2020 year.

Mayor Ames Leslie said the early planning is because of tight timelines to request proposals for construction projects due to the relatively short construction season in Saskatchewan.

“The sooner we can get budgets approved, the quicker departments can get out there and start putting out tenders to have the roads done, to have curbs done, have sidewalks built or any repairs that need to be done from a large scale in the community,” he said.

Leslie said the town hopes to have its budget completed in the near future.

“It just makes everything flow a lot easier,” he said. “It’s been my goal to have our budgets approved or ready to be approved in December or the start of January, and it looks like we are on task this year to have that done.”

A report submitted by Finance Director David Gillan indicated the preliminary date the first draft of the 2020 budget to be presented to council is Nov. 18.

Budget deliberations sessions will follow and the town will notify the public of the specific dates in case members of the public want to attend.

The town’s 2020 operating and capital budgets are expected to be approved by council on Dec. 16.
