Little Shop of Horrors ‘a perfect addition’ to Halloween weekend in the Battlefords

Oct 8, 2019 | 5:01 PM

A musical about a seemingly innocent flower that quickly shows how not every blossom that blooms is sweet will take the stage in North Battleford this month.

Little Shop of Horrors will show at the Dekker Centre on Oct. 26 and 27 in what Kelsey Stone promised to be the perfect event to slide into a Halloween weekend.

“It is the perfect thing to do before perhaps going out for supper or to a party,” she said. “It is so silly and campy and it is perfect for Halloween.”

The production centres around a man named Seymour who is down on his luck and looking for a way out. He also has a crush on a girl named Audrey but is too shy to pursue the love interest.

But with a little help from an exotic plant, Seymour soon finds good fortune and fame but at a cost. As the plant starts to grow it demands blood to get big and strong. It starts to speak to Seymour and manipulate him into committing sinister acts to continue to make his dreams come true.

Put on by Saskatoon’s Ppl r Ppl Productions, Stone, a cofounder, said the story is quite serious but jam-packed with great, upbeat songs. The story is narrated by three individuals who use tight harmonies to carry the deviously delicious Broadway sci-fi musical.

Stone said the set is colourful, involves elaborate lighting and is coupled with five live musicians.

Though parental advisory is advised, Stone, who plays Audrey, said she took her own five and eight-year-old children and they were old enough to handle it and thought the plant was quite funny.

The Little Shop of Horrors is the brainchild of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who are behind the scores of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast, and Aladdin.

Ppl r Ppl Productions put on a sold out performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in 2017 and Avenue Q in 2018.

Showtimes are Sat., Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 27 at 2 p.m.
