United Way launches 2019 campaign with kickoff breakfast

Oct 4, 2019 | 2:46 PM

The Battlefords United Way had a successful breakfast launch Thursday to kick off this year’s fundraising campaign.

Event Campaign Coordinator Sharon Mohagen said the non profit’s blitz attracted support from businesses and residents alike for the campaign start in October.

About $2,000 was raised at the breakfast. The goal for the entire 2019 campaign, which ends around the middle of November, is $180,000. The United Way will have another fundraiser in the new year.

Mohagen said a number of businesses stepped forward as sponsors to show their support for the campaign launch at the Dekker Centre.

“We appreciate our sponsors being there for us,” she said.

To mark its 50th anniversary, the local United Way is asking people to each donate $50.

The next fundraiser is called Coffee on the Run on Friday, Oct. 11. People can order a coffee online at the United Way’s website or send a request to the United Way office to take part. They can pick up a muffin and coffee for $5 at the stand at Guy’s Furniture for the fundraiser.

Mohagen said several businesses in the Battlefords will hold various fundraisers to support the United Way’s campaign.

The organization helps support six non profits in the community, including the Canadian Mental Health Association Battlefords branch, The Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre, The Lighthouse Serving the Battlefords, the Battlefords Boys and Girls Club, the Battlefords Trade and Education Centre, and the food bank, as well as some special projects.

“Our vision is to have a safe, empowering, and healthy community where social issues are solved,” Mohagen said. “Our main focus is [to address] poverty, education for both children and adults, support for truth and reconciliation calls to action, mental heath, and homeless issues.”
