Stars blank Bruins to improve to 9-1 on season

Oct 4, 2019 | 11:58 PM

The Battlefords North Stars shut out the Estevan Bruins Friday, 2-0 at Affinity Place in Estevan.

With the win, the team improves to 9-1 through their opening 10 games, and 3-1 on their current four-games in four-nights road trip.

Matthias Urbanski and Brett Gammer each scored for the team, while Stars’ goaltender Adam Dmyterko stopped all 30 shots he faced for the shutout to lead the Stars to victory.

Dmyterko’s shutout was his first of the season, and the first of the 19-year-old’s SJHL career.

Following a scoreless opening frame, Urbanski’s goal broke the ice midway through the second period.

Scoring his third of the season on a laser beam wrister from the high slot, Urbanski’s goal was the only shot to beat a goalie on the evening.

Gammer’s goal was scored into an empty net with Estevan pushing for the tie late in the third. Serving as the insurance marker to victory, Gammer’s goal was the forward’s third of the season as well.

A scary moment of play came late in the third when, while on the cycle deep in Estevan ice, Urbanski caught a skate from an opposition Bruin player in the chin. Taken for repairs, the forward was stitched up and back on the bus smiling and laughing with teammates for the bus ride back to Weyburn.

Estevan posted an 0-for-7 billing on the power play on the night, while the Battlefords finished 0-for-5.

With the shutout performance, Dmyterko improves to a perfect 6-0 on the season, with a 2.00 goals-against average and .942 save percentage.

Estevan’s Keenan Rancier stopped 25 of 26 shots on the night, giving up just a single goal in the loss for the Bruins. With the defeat, the Bruins fall to 1-4-2 on the year.

The North Stars will return to action Saturday night against the Weyburn Red Wings in Weyburn. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. on 93.3 The Rock.
