Terriers show bite as North Stars fall 6-2 to Yorkton

Oct 1, 2019 | 11:41 PM

The Battlefords North Stars fell 6-2 to the Yorkton Terriers Tuesday night at Farrell Agencies Arena in Yorkton.

Battlefords’ forwards Logan Spence and Rylan Nivon scored for the Stars in the loss, while goaltender Parker Rey stopped 18 of 23 shots against.

Yorkton forward Chantz Petruic scored a pair to bookend the statsheet, while Alec Zawatsky, Steven Norum, Riley Egan and Ryan Ries also chipped in with a single apiece for the Terriers. Goaltender Philippe Bond made 43 stops on the night to lead his team to victory.

The North Stars, who entered action averaging just under 42 shots per game, stuck with their M.O. and peppered Yorkton goalie Phillippe Bond with another 40-plus on Tuesday night, but the goalie stood tall when called upon. (Martin Martinson/battlefordsNOW Staff)

Petruic’s first of the night opened the scoring just 1:26 into the period to give the Terriers an early 1-0 lead.

Late in the period Spence’s first of the season pulled the Stars back on even footing with a backhander from in tight to make it 1-1.

With the goal, Spence becomes the 17th different North Star to score at least a single goal for the team this year.

After the first period ended in a tie, Stars’ forward Rylan Nivon was the first to break new ground in the second.

Nivon capitalized on a nice bang-bang play in front off a pass from linemate Austin Becker to give the veteran his third of the season and second in his last two games.

At 2-1, the goal would serve as the Stars’ lone lead of the night.

Yorkton received back-to-back goals from Zawatsky and Norum to pull back ahead by two to end the second frame with Yorkton ahead, 3-2.

The Terriers followed up those two goals late in the second with an additional three in the third from Egan, Ries and Petriuc (with his second) for five unanswered on the night; 6-2 Terriers, the final.

The North Stars will now look to bounce back quickly, as the team is back in action Wednesday night against the Melville Millionaires in Melville. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. on NAPA North Stars Hockey.
