Former Battleford principal looks back on Saskatchewan’s flag for 50th anniversary

A former Battleford principal remembers when the new Saskatchewan Flag was introduced in 1969.

Eugene Thera was principal at St. Vital Elementary School at the time it was raised at his school.

“Saskatchewan should have a flag that can recognize our province, and that we’re proud of. It has been a good thing throughout the years,” he said.

Designed by Anthony Drake in 1968, the Saskatchewan flag was officially adopted on September 22, 1969.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the province’s official emblem.

He said with the new Canadian flag, incorporating the Maple Leaf in the design, being proclaimed in 1965, it was fitting to see the new Saskatchewan flag also fly by its side.

“Having both new flags was a good project,” he said.

Thera went on to teach at Battleford Junior High School from 1970 until 1984 when he retired.
