Olympic Style Amateur boxing coming to the Battlefords in October

Four Corner Boxing is hosting an Olympic Style amateur boxing event in the Battlefords next month.

Fright or Fight Beatdown in the Battlefords will feature boxers from all over Canada.

Participants in the event range from beginners just getting their feet wet in the ring, to veteran amateur boxers with numerous bouts under their belt.

Tournament organizer Dylin Curiston said the event will be drawing in competitors from all over Western Canada and features participants ranging from age seven to age 45.

Four Corner Boxing is a non-profit boxing organization in the Battlefords. Curiston said that it is a great sport for people of all ages to get involved with.

“Our main goal is for kids, youth and teens of North Battleford to be involved in a sport that doesn’t cost a lot of money,” he said. “There are lots of kids that cannot afford to play hockey or some of the other sports so we’ve brought in boxing as an alternative. I think every kid deserves to have a passion through sports and this is a good opportunity for them to try something new.”

This is the first time Four Corner Boxing has hosted an Olympic style boxing matches and the first time an amateur boxing event has been held in the Battlefords since 2004.

This year marks the fifth year of operation for Four Corner Boxing, which is a passion project for Curiston and the rest of his coaching staff. The staff do not receive any pay for coaching at the gym and are just interested in promoting the sport and supplying kids from the Battlefords a place to safely practice and train.

Curiston explained that amateur events like this one offer a wide array of boxing matches.

“There will be a good display of local and visiting boxers. Some of them are going to be stepping into the ring for the first time, so you can see how they handle the nerves of stepping into the ring. There will also be people with over fifty amateur matches so you’ll get to see the very beginning of a boxer’s career, as well as more advanced boxers as well,” he said.

The event will be hosted at the Agrivilla Saturday, Oct. 26. The doors will open at 5 p.m. with competition getting started at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and are available at Four Corners Boxing or Blend Restaurant.
