North Stars beat Bruins in Battlefords on road to 3-0 start

Sep 21, 2019 | 11:40 PM

The Battlefords North Stars continued their hot start to the season Saturday, as the team downed the Estevan Bruins 3-1 to improve to a perfect 3-0 record on the season.

Three different goal scorers contributed for the team in the win, as forwards Hunter Rambow, Austin Becker and Dylan Esau each chipped in with a goal apiece and goaltender Adam Dmyterko stopped 35 of 36 shots, to lead the North Stars to victory.

For Rambow, the evening marked the 18-year-old’s first career SJHL game. However, it did not take long for The Pas, Man., product to make his mark in the Battlefords.

Rambow opened the scoring just over three minutes into the first period, on his first shot, on his first shift.

Swarmed by excited teammates and smiling faces, the moment also served as notice to the rest of the league, as the rookie became the 12th different Stars’ player to score for the team through just three games.

Despite a 20-11 shot advantage for the Stars through the opening 20 minutes, the goal stood as the lone tally of the first period.

In the second, Estevan tied the game with an early period goal of their own.

Coming off a net front drive just over four minutes into the second, fellow 18-year-old Troy Hamilton tallied his first of the season as well for the Bruins, to knot the game 1-1.

While each team would continue to fire pucks on goal throughout the middle period, the goaltenders kept the door shut. Both Dmyterko and the Bruins’ Keenan Rancier faced double-digit shot totals through each of the three periods on the night.

Heading into the third period tied, the teams remained that way until just under half-way through the frame, when The Wisconsin Wonder once again made his presence felt.

With just under 10 minutes gone in the period, Austin Becker cashed in for his fourth goal in three games. Coming off a gorgeous passing play from teammates Rylan Nivon and Ryland McNinch, Becker snapped his shot home off a rush chance for what would prove to be the game winner at 2-1.

Stars’ forward Dylan Esau sealed the deal late with an empty netter to ice the proverbial cake for the night, making it a 3-1 contest.

Rancier stopped 44 of 46 shots on the night for the Bruins, keeping his team in the game until late.

With the loss, Estevan falls to 1-3 to start the season.

Both teams will now shift their focus to Warman and the League Showcase.

The North Stars return to action tomorrow night at Legends Centre to take on the Weyburn Red Wings.

The Ultra-Print Pregame Show Sunday will begin at 6:45 p.m. with puck drop at 7 p.m. on NAPA North Stars Hockey on 1050 CJNB.
