Stars kickoff breakfast reveals 2019-20 roster, team captains

Sep 11, 2019 | 2:00 PM

The Battlefords North Stars hosted their annual kickoff breakfast Wednesday morning to introduce the team’s roster for the 2019-20 season.

Twelve players from last year’s Canalta Cup winning roster will be returning to the team this season.

Up front, forwards Matthias Urbanski (’99), and Elijah Loon-Stewardson (’99) are the lone 20-year-old returnees for the club.

The pair are joined by Quintin Loon-Stewardson (’00), Brett Gammer (’00), Austin Becker (’00), Kaden Boser (’00), Dylan Esau (’01) and Logan Spence (’00) as the eight returning forwards to the team.

New faces up front include 20-year-old Rylan Nivon (’99), and ’98 born forwards Carson Reagan, Hunter Rambow, Ryland McNinch, Palmer Sinclair, and Dace Prymak.

Steven Kesslering (’02) is the team’s lone 17-year old.

Matthew Fletcher (’99), Seth Summers (’99), and Dylan McCabe (’99) make up the 20-year-old contingent on the blue line.

The three are joined by returning North Stars’ minute-muncher, Noah Form (‘00) and rookies Liam Antoniak (’01), Jordan Gagnon (’01) and Timon Prexler (’00).

In goal, 19-year-old Adam Dmyterko (’00) who played lights out, posting a .920 save-percentage with the team last season in his five-game stint with the club, will be handed the reins as starter this time around.

Joining Dmyterko between the pipes will be rookie netminders Parker Rey (’00) and Austin Schwab (’01)

Stars’ head coach, Brayden Klimosko said the roster make up is a bit different from last year, but that is what makes the start of the new season so exciting.

“I think we are going to be a little bit more skilled and we have a little bit more speed,” he said. “I think we are going to be faster, although in saying that, we probably won’t be as heavy of a team. It is totally different, and we’re not going to play the way we did last year. We’re going to coach differently because of it. It’s new, it’s fresh, it’s exciting, and we are looking forward to getting the new season going,” he added.

Following the breakfast, the North Stars also announced the team’s captains for the season.

Fletcher will serve as captain of the team, while Urbanski, Elijah Loon-Stewardson, and Summers will serve as alternate captains for the club.

Fletcher said he is grateful for the opportunity to lead the team into the new season as captain.

“It is obviously a tremendous honour to wear the “C” for a team like this,” he said. “Coming after guys like Layne Young and Cody Spagrud, those guys were great captains, so big shoes to fill for sure, but it is a great honour to represent and lead the team.”

Fletcher, who lived with Young during his rookie season, and spent a lot of time with Spagrud the last two years with the Stars, said his time with the two has certainly had an effect on his own leadership style.

“Those guys have definitely influenced me big time,” he said. “Studying under them, and hanging out with them all the time, I owe them a couple ‘thank yous’ that’s for sure.”

Klimosko said it was an easy choice to give Fletcher the “C”, adding that he has been familiar with the defenceman since his days in Humboldt. Klimosko was a member of the Broncos’ staff, when Fletcher first began his Junior career with the organization in 2016.

“I always joke that [Fletcher] was the best trade I’ve ever made,” Klimosko said. “We traded him here and now it is funny how it’s gone full circle and he is our captain. I think he is going to be a great captain. He is a great leader and I think we are very fortunate to have the leadership group that we have.”

The North Stars will kick off their regular season against the rival Kindersley Klippers Friday at the West Central Events Centre in Kindersley. The team’s home-opener will be played Saturday at the backend of the home-and-home.

Both games will be broadcast on 1050 CJNB. The pregame show will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. Marty Martinson will have the call on the action.
