JPII sees new face at the helm with Principal McIsaac

With each new school year comes new opportunity, not only for the students, but the staff as well.

No one knows that better than Jamie McIsaac, the new principal at John Paul II Collegiate.

McIsaac, who is from Orilla, Ontario, began his career in education in his hometown teaching math and science at the local public school.

In 1985, he moved across town and helped open a Catholic High School in the community.

As one of the institution’s original teachers, McIsaac taught at the Catholic School for four years. It was there that he branched out to teach guidance and special education, in addition to math and science classes.

McIsaac spent 31 years working in education, when he retired for a brief period at age 54.

He said he applied for the position as principal of JPII because it offered a new and exciting opportunity to get back to doing what he loved.

“I like a challenge,” he said. “I had read an article probably two years ago in Maclean’s magazine about the Battlefords, [and] felt that they got a bad rap. I thought that was something that was calling me. I had been retired, and thought I still have game, so I figured I’d put my name in the hat when I saw they had a posting for principalship and I was interviewed and hired.”

He said he is looking forward to the new chapter ahead this year.

“I’m really excited. This is a great school,” he said. “There are wonderful things that are happening in this school and I find that the staff are very committed to the kids. They offer a wide variety of programs to ensure the needs of every student that is here is met.”
