Two boys who grew up playing baseball on local ball diamonds are now Western Canadian champions.

Levi Scherman and Cory Wouters played for the Sask 5 Giants 15U AAA team out of Martensville this year.

Representing Saskatchewan, Martensville has paved their way to Westerns each of the last three years before clinching the first Western Canadian championship in their community’s history.

The team finished with a 26-17-1 record this season to close out the regular season third in the league and just two points back of first place overall. They continued their stellar play into provincials, posting a 4-1 record against some of the top teams in Saskatchewan earlier this month.

Following their provincial crown, the Giants continued to gain momentum as their run progressed to the championships, with the two Battlefords’ boys playing a pivotal role in the team’s success.

The Giants followed up a 16-11 win over the host Lloydminster team in their opening game with an 8-1 decision over Red Deer. In their third contest, it was Wouters who led the way, pitching a complete game against North Winnipeg while leading his team to a decisive 12-1 final.

Head coach Steve Hildebrand said the performance was especially impressive due to the stakes of the game.

“It is not easy to pitch a complete game at an event like that,” Hildebrand said. “[Wouters] had a couple big hits in the finals too, and I know he had a couple RBI’s. We were able to mercy him in five innings, so he got the complete game, [and] his bat was really good throughout the weekend.”

The coach said Scherman, who helped get the club to nationals by delivering a grand slam against Moose Jaw in provincials, also played an important part at Westerns. Hildebrand said he provided the team with timely hits throughout, while also contributing on the defensive side of things as well thanks to a couple nice catches in the left field.

In the finals, the team was faced with a familiar foe once again in the form of the host, the Northwest Prairie Pirates, from Lloydminster. Seizing their opportunity to clinch the championship, the Giants again came out on top, 11-4 the final to secure the Western Canadian Championship for their side.

“We were just really solid throughout the week,” Hildebrand said. “Our bats were good and everyone just stepped up and really did a good job, which was great to see.”
