Frontier Mall service road to see repairs

Aug 22, 2019 | 5:07 PM

Taking a drive down the service road near Frontier Mall will soon be better.

Based on administration’s recommendation, North Battleford lawmakers agreed to hire G and C Asphalt to upgrade a portion of the connector road off Highway 16 at a cost of $65,000, which is within budget.

The North Battleford firm submitted the lowest of two bids received.

Council indicated the road has been in poor condition for a long time and needs to be upgraded.

Director of Operations Stewart Schafer said in his report the scope of the project is to repair part of the service road, not reconstruct the entire road. Administration said it was concerned the province may look at reconfiguring Highway 16 and the service road at some point in the future, although nothing has been decided as of yet.

“We are just looking at repairing damage of the service road in front of Frontier Mall,” Schafer said of the current project.

The city had hoped the province would improve the service road as part of the Urban Highway Connector Program. However, since that did not happen, the city decided to take on some of the repairs itself, rather than wait any longer.

The length of the section of road to be resurfaced is estimated at about 1,000 metres. The roadway runs from the second entrance at the Frontier Mall to the area in front of the Gold Eagle Lodge.

The firm plans to grind the existing asphalt surface into the base and pave the roadway surface with a new 75 mm asphalt surface material.
