Royal Canadian Legion to hold cenotaph re-dedication ceremony this weekend

The local Royal Canadian Legion Branch is having an unveiling of plaques and re-dedication of the cenotaph in Battleford Aug. 24.

Taking place at Cenotaph Park, four plaques will be unveiled on the afternoon, along with the rededication of the cenotaph originally erected in 1923.

The afternoon will begin with a small parade made up of a pipes and drum band at 1 p.m. After the ceremony at 1:30 p.m., there will be a complimentary lunch and refreshments to follow at the Legion Hall.

Saturday’s ceremony comes after recent upgrades to the cairn and surrounding area. The legion also redid the sidewalk and bought some benches commemorating the First and Second World Wars.

President of the Battleford Legion Esther Delainey said there will be a lot of new things to see for those who take part on the weekend.

Delainey said the upgrades and event itself are important because of the lives of those who made the ultimate sacrifice that are commemorated by the cenotaph.

“It is very important to keep the memory of the lost solders in everybody’s mind, and those who served as peacekeepers, so we don’t forget those who fought for our freedom,” she said.
