Latest arrest in Laverdiere homicide investigation appears in court

After she was arrested in Edmonton last week, Nikita Sandra Cook made her first appearance in North Battleford Monday morning.

Cook is charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping in connection to the May 1 homicide of Tiki Laverdiere.

A Canada-wide warrant was issued for her arrest after she was charged on Aug. 9. She is facing a number of other charges unrelated to the homicide investigation.

Cook was remanded in custody and ordered to have no contact with several individuals who could provide evidence or be co-accused in the case.

The woman from the Onion Lake Cree Nation will be back in court on Sept. 13.

Seven others are charged in connection to Laverdiere’s death. Four are facing first-degree murder charges and three are charged with accessory after the fact to murder.

Soaring Eagle Whitstone, Nicole Cook, Shayla Orthner and Danita Thomas are charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle.

Jesse Sangster, 23, was arrested in Edmonton on July 28. He is facing charges for accessory after the fact to murder and theft of a motor vehicle.

Brent Checkosis, 18, is facing charges for accessory after the fact to murder, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle.

Mavis Quinn Takekenew, 55, is facing a lone charge of accessory after the fact to murder.

Laverdiere was reported missing on May 12 and last seen in North Battleford on April 29.

Human remains were found in a rural area outside of the city on July 11 and confirmed to be the Edmonton woman on July 16.
