North Stars Golf Classic shines bright start to season

With summer drawing to a close and autumn sitting just around the corner, the countdown to hockey season has begun.

Known somewhat as the unofficial start to the new season, the Battlefords North Stars held their Annual Golf Classic Friday at Jackfish Lodge and Conference Centre.

The Golf Classic brings current and former players together along with sponsors and fans alike, giving community members a chance to get to know the team away from the rink.

Among the former North Stars’ in attendance at this year’s event were a pair of old team captains, in Mitch Wall and Barrett Penner.

Wall said after taking a bit of a hiatus from the event over the last couple of years, it was nice to get back to the clubhouse and see the continued support of the team, as well as some old friends.

“It has been a great day just catching up with some of the guys I used to play with,” he said. “It is nice catching up with these guys because I don’t see them most of the year.”

“Hanging out with the fellas again and just being able to reminisce a little bit has been great,” Penner echoed. “Having the community’s support, everybody backs you when you’re a North Star. Boys and community-wise everyone just loves the Stars.”

One of the current players on the North Stars’ roster, Seth Summers was also at the event.

Summers was joined on the afternoon by fellow teammates, Joel Grzybowski, MacGregor Sinclair, and Owen Lamb from last year’s championship club. Also on the team was Palmer Sinclair, who will join the team this fall.

Summers said while it was nice to meet some of the fans and hit the links with some friends, his performance on the course was certainly nothing to write home about.

“I’m probably the worst golfer in the group here,” he said with a laugh. “I’m not very good at golf, and I didn’t practice at all this summer, so I have to step my game up for sure,” he added with a smile.

Over 100 people took part in Friday’s event, with a total 21 teams making it a full golf course.
