Byelection Q&A

A Q&A with councillor candidate Lyndi Marchuk

Aug 16, 2019 | 5:02 PM

Councillor candidate Lyndi Marchuk sat down with meadowlakeNOW for an interview ahead of the Sept. 18 byelection. As part of our coverage for both the vacant mayoral and soon-to-come councillor seat, meadowlakeNOW will reach out to all candidates as they are announced and pose similar questions. Some answers were amended for clarity.

For people in the community who don’t know who you, please introduce yourself?

I moved here about two years ago after spending a lot of my summers and holidays here with family. I’m manage Solitude Trophy & Frames. I also drive a school bus for the Northwest School Division and I have a two-and-a-half-year-old son, Maverick.

Why are you running for city council?

I am a very community-oriented person and I’d like to see our community continue to grow and prosper. I really feel like our council could use a female voice.

What sets you apart from other candidates?

I guess being a young working mom, I feel like can relate better to the struggles that working class families face like finding safe and affordable housing, childcare and year-round family friendly activities.

What are the three biggest issues you see in Meadow Lake and how will you address them?

I feel like there is a lack of affordable housing in part due to the high land taxes and the minimal services offered in return for those taxes. I feel young working families are the backbone for growth and community and we need to do something to attract and keep them.

What is one thing you like that is currently being done by the city?

I really like the innovative use of the arena this summer for the Kidz Zone and pickleball. It’s really encouraging to see that we have new businesses moving into Meadow Lake.

What is one thing that city council is doing that you dislike?

There’s nothing really specific that I dislike but I do see room for improvement with event planning and encouraging some of our small local businesses.
