Pickleball clinic coming to the Battlefords

Aug 15, 2019 | 2:00 PM

The Battlefords Pickleball Club (BPC) is hosting a Pickleball Clinic at the Nationswest Field House Sept. 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Sept. 18 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

A bit of a unique sport as its name may suggest, pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. Players use their paddles to hit a perforated ball over a low net on a badminton-sized court.

Open to all ages, pickleball is one of the fastest growing recreational sports in North America. The sport’s growing popularity has been on full display in the Battlefords specifically, as the local pickleball club features over 70 registered members since forming just last year.

Event organizer, Debbie Iwanchuk, is a member of the Battlefords Pickleball Club. She said the clinic is a great opportunity for those in the area who want to learn more about the sport, and give it a try. Iwanchuk said playing pickleball is a nice way to get some exercise in a fun environment, while not getting overtaxed.

“It is a slow enough game that many, many people can play [regardless of age or athleticism],” she said. “It is a great game for all ages but I think the popularity is particularly among the boomer bracket. The clinic actually just sort of evolved because there are just more and more people taking up the sport.”

Equipment is provided for the clinic.
