Fair fundraiser benefits youth mental health

Aug 15, 2019 | 5:23 PM

The Northwest Territorial Days exhibition got off to a good start this year.

One of the highlights of the fair this year is the dunk tank fundraiser to benefit mental health initiatives for youth.

Called Dunk the Stigma, the initiative promotes the Kids Help Phone line. The event is located near the Agrivilla Building on the fair grounds.

Chad Snyder said this is his second time helping organize the event. He said the community needs projects that help increase awareness about mental health to get rid of the stigma of suicide.

Snyder said individuals need to talk about their problems more and not keep their feelings bottled up.

He encourages people to come to the event and try to dunk some community leaders in the tank of water who volunteered their time.

Battlefords RCMP S/Sgt. Darcy Woolfitt was among those dunked Thursday afternoon. He described the experience as “refreshing,” after coming out of the tub of water. He said he was dunked about 60 times so far.

“I took part in it last year,” he said. “For me it’s an extremely worthwhile cause. Anything I can do to support youth in the community I’m all in.”

Winners announced

The winners were announced for the Northwest Territorial Days Parade on Tuesday.

There were about 150 participants in the event this year, around 20 more than last year.

“There was a lot of people that watched it, and I had lots of positive comments,” Jocelyn Ritchie, manager of the Battlefords Agricultural Society, said.

Many of the parade entries stayed true to the theme of the event this year, Pirates on the Saskatchewan.
