Northwest Territorial Days Parade to kick off exhibition celebration

Aug 12, 2019 | 1:10 PM

People are invited to tie on an eye patch and get their booty down to the annual Northwest Territorial Days Parade on Aug. 13 at 7 p.m.

A pirate-themed event, this year there will be a slight tweak to the parade’s regular route due to the ongoing construction on 100 St.

The parade will begin at the Civic Centre and travel west along 19 Ave., south down 100 St., east on 15 Ave., north onto 107 St. and shift onto Diefenbaker drive on the way back to the Civic Centre.

General Manager of the Agricultural Society Jocelyn Ritchie said the event is one the organization looks forward to each year, as it offers a chance to bring the community together with something to enjoy for all ages.

“We always have something new and exciting and there is absolutely something for everyone,” she said. “From [those] in a stroller to the elderly, we try to make a great parade and a great exhibition for all at the lowest cost possible. It is a very safe and family-friendly event and we’re very proud of it.”

A highlight of the summer season in the Battlefords’ since 1887, 2019 will mark the 132 year of the parade. There are expected to be over 100 floats in this years’ event, featuring everything from horses and antique vehicles, to dancers and friendly pirates.

An important note to stress this year, Ritchie said, is that while candy can be handed out, it cannot be thrown. Anyone seen throwing candy will be evicted from the parade. Parents are also asked to make sure their kids do not run onto the street.

Following the parade Tuesday will be the Northwest Territorial Days Exhibition, which runs from August 14 to 16 at Exhibition Park.
