Adult dodgeball league returns to NationsWEST Field House

Aug 12, 2019 | 1:00 PM

If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.

Battle In The Fords is an adult dodgeball league at the NationsWest Field House. It will consist of six to 12 teams with six to 12 players per team. Teams will play five half-hour sets, which can be up to 15 games every Monday night at 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. from Sept. 16 to Oct. 28.

Program Manager Candace Dustan said there has been substantial interest in adult leagues like this one.

“We started this league a few years ago, and adults seem to have a lot of fun playing games because it is not something that we get to do very often as adults,” she said.

The league will run on a six versus six format and any players beyond that number can rotate in as substitutes. Two players on each team must be female.

The rules are simple: 12 players enter the court and the last team standing wins. The objective is to eliminate all players on the opposing team. A player will be considered eliminated if they are hit below the shoulders by a ball thrown by the opposition, or a ball they have thrown is caught by an opposing player. Stepping over the centre line or dropping a ball will also eliminate that player.

After battling it out every Monday night, a champion will be crowned in a tournament at the end of the season.

“We will run the tournament much like the other days but we will be keeping tabs on which are the stronger teams as we go throughout the league and we’ll try to keep them evenly matched so that there is a winner because there will be a trophy at the end,” Dustan said.

Registration is open until Sept. 9 by phoning NationsWEST Field House or entering online.

“This is an excellent opportunity to have fun and play while getting physical exercise and socializing at the same time,” Dustan said.
