Two Battlefords area boys heading to Western Canadian Baseball Championships

Two boys from the Battlefords area will be swinging for the fences later this month.

That’s as they are headed to the Western Canadian 15U Baseball Championships in Lloydminster from August 15 to 18.

Levi Scherman and Cory Wouters play for the Sask 5 Giants 15U AAA team out of Martensville. They won provincials this year and are going as Saskatchewan’s representatives to the Western Canadian Championships.

The team went 2-1 in the 4 team round robin. They beat the South East A’s 7-1 on Friday and played a double header on Saturday, losing to the Saskatoon Astros 6-4 before beating the Moose Jaw Canucks 18-1. The game against Moose Jaw saw the team put up 17 runs in one inning.

They then moved on to the playoffs where they got their revenge against the Saskatoon Astros beating them 10-1 in the semi-finals and then the Regina White Sox 5-3 in the final.

Head coach Steve Hildebrand had nothing but positive things to say about both boys.

“Levi coming in for his first year with us, he had a slower start but played some great left field for us all year,” Hildebrand said.

“In the finals he had to make a diving catch with one out and a runner on first, so you know, he made a lot of plays for us. He also hit a grand slam for us against Moose Jaw which is a big play for him at provincials.”

Hildebrand also credited Levi with being a great teammate.

“He did an outstanding job so far this year of knowing his role and being a great teammate. We have a really good group that comes together to make a really good team,” he said.

Hildebrand said that Cory was a great utility player for the team, able to play whatever position was needed of him at the time.

“He pitched against Moose Jaw and did a great job. He has pitched, played first, and right field,” he said. “He is our top average guy for hitting. He has been pretty consistent throughout the year at the plate and been great defensively. He is one of three left handed pitchers we have and we’ve put him in some tough spots through the year and he’s always come through for us.”

Both Levi and Cory have been playing and training for baseball year round with Going Yard in Saskatoon, a development program that runs out of the new baseball facilities at the Gordie Howe Sports Complex.

“They are both great kids who worked hard in practice all year long. They came into our group and found success. This group of kids has been to Westerns the last four years together and won back-to-back provincial titles in Bantam.”
