Live concert series a hit in the Battlefords

Downtown North Battleford at its finest.

That’s how Executive Director of the Downtown Business Improvement District (BID) Misty Lavertu described Wednesday’s concert in Central Park.

“It just gives everyone the opportunity to come out and really enjoy the community. They can visit with their neighbor, and support a good cause,” she said.

The Downtown BID has hosted Live at Lunch, a concert series through the summer, for a number of years. This year, however, the event was given a brief tweak with a couple of concert dates moved to an evening billing as well, dubbed Live at 5.

Lavertu said she’s thrilled with the traction the event continues to build as the summer progresses. Between 80 and nearly 200 people attend a given concert to purchase a burger hot off the grill and enjoy the complimentary music.

“It’s been incredible,” she said. “Each event we have had more and more people come out. They are loving the entertainment, loving not having to cook for themselves or go out for lunch. [People] can bring a blanket or a lawn chair and just enjoy the beautiful Central Park in the downtown.”

Local musician Troy Wakelin, who was born and raised in the Battlefords, performed at Wednesday afternoon’s concert. A veteran of the music scene, Wakelin spent a couple years traveling Western Canada to perform as many as 75 shows a year. Now back home, he said it is nice to have events like Live in the Park to showcase local performers.

“It’s really awesome they have something like this,” Wakelin said. “Lots of people come out to support it and it’s just nice to see there is a place for people to come and play. It’s always nice to play at home, and to see people you know coming out to watch you, that’s the best part.”

Just one concert remains this summer, with the final Performance in the Park being played Aug. 21 from 5 to 6 p.m.
