DQ hopes to raise over $10K for children’s hospital on Miracle Treat Day

A North Battleford Dairy Queen server carefully pours soft ice cream into a cup, deftly scoops up sweet delights such as Smarties or Oreo cookie chunks to go on top, and puts the entire recipe into the mixer to shake it up.

Another tasty Blizzard is ready for the next customer to enjoy to celebrate Miracle Treat Day on Aug. 8.

This marks the 17 year of DQ’s Miracle Treat Day event. All net proceeds raised from Blizzard sales and donations benefit the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation in Saskatoon, the only Saskatchewan member of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

North Battleford Dairy Queen owner/operator Terry Burnett looks forward to this day all year.

“Myself and all my staff here are very passionate about it,” he said.

Last year his store alone donated $10,000 to the children’s hospital from Blizzard sales and donations for Miracle Treat Day. He is hoping to top that amount this year.

“We have a lot of fun on a day like today,” Burnett said. “We know the proceeds are going to a great cause – the children’s hospital here in Saskatchewan. It has been a long time needed, and we are glad to be a part of it.”

By 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, the store’s staff already made more than 500 Blizzard treats for pre-orders alone. Last year on Miracle Treat Day the location sold more than 1,400 Blizzards.

“We really appreciate the support from North Battleford and area,” Burnett said. “It’s pretty hard not to make a day like today special.”

People can continue to purchase Blizzards until 10 p.m. at the restaurant and 11 p.m. at the drive-thru to contribute to the cause.

“We want people to come down and show their support,” Burnett said. “All the money raised at this store and all the stores in Saskatchewan stays right here in Saskatchewan.”

He said Dairy Queen has been part of the Children’s Miracle Network for over 35 years. To date, over $145 million has been raised across North America from DQs.

Last year in Canada, $3.5 million was raised for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in total. This year the goal is $3.6 million.
