The community of Meota is mourning the loss of longtime local businessman and community volunteer Kevin Foster.

Foster, 53, who owned the Meota Hotel and Bar died on July 31 due to a sudden unexpected medical issue involving an internal bleed.

His family is planning a Celebration of Life on Aug. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Meota Community Hall. Local classic-rock cover-band Rosetta will perform a show on Aug. 24 at the hotel and patio as a tribute to Foster who was a strong promoter of the group. Any donations the family receives will benefit the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon in memory of Foster.

Foster dedicated his time to family, his business and the community during his life.

His spouse Carrie Flasch said he took great pride in his business and has owned the hotel in Meota for at least seven years. He also used to own the Rendezvous Hotel in Edam for many years before it was destroyed in a fire. He also ran the Meota hotel.

Flasch described Foster, who is originally from Edam, as a true community-minded person.

“He was the type of guy that would help anyone,” she said.

During the winter he often kept busy clearing snow from neighbours’ paths in Meota.

“He used to leave here in the mornings on his little John Deere tractor and plow just about every neighbours’ driveway, and the church driveway,” Flasch said.

Foster also would often spend the day helping in the Meota community, and would also take it upon himself to clean the beaches and rake seaweed whenever he had a chance.

“He loved the community,” Flasch said.

Foster also was a hard worker and had travelled all over the world taking on various business initiatives in his younger days.

He also enjoyed running the hotel and bar in Meota and meeting all the guests, Flasch said.

He would be the first to sing on karaoke nights at the bar, to encourage guests to get up and join in the fun.

“He loved his music,” Flasch said.

Family was also important to Foster. He leaves behind his son Colton and daughter Cayley. He also had eight grandchildren, combined from both his own and Flasch’s families.

“That was everything to him,” she said.

Harry Dekker, a member of the band Rosetta, said he has been friends with Foster for about 10 years, as the band played at the hotel many times, and was sad to hear of his passing.

Dekker said Foster had a great fondness for classic rock music from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s, which Rosetta often performed.

“It was always a delight for him to have us there at his club,” he added.

Dekker mentioned he respected Foster for his character, as a sincere, loyal individual, and also as “a good businessman.”

“He’ll be missed in the community of Meota,” Dekker said.

Tickets for the Rosetta tribute show in memory of Foster are available at the Meota Hotel and Bar and in the community.
