U16 Western Canadian Softball Championships in Biggar this weekend

Jul 30, 2019 | 2:00 PM

Nine hopeful teams will descend on Biggar this weekend vying for their chance to be crowned the Western Canadian Softball Champions.

Biggar is set to host the U16 Girls Western Canadian Softball Championships this weekend from Aug 2 to 5. Three teams from Saskatchewan will face off against two teams from each of British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba in a six-game round robin. The three Saskatchewan teams are the Tisdale RiverDogs, the Southeast SuperNovas and the host team, the Biggar Nationals.

The event would normally run parallel to the U16 Boys Western Canadian Softball Championships but with the Canadian National Softball Championship in Saskatoon the same weekend this year, the boy’s event was canceled.

The games will start at 8 a.m. on Friday morning with the official opening ceremonies at noon. The round robin format has each team play all the other teams not from their province. The round robin games will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning.

From there, the top four teams will be seeded into a playoff bracket that will play out on Sunday afternoon with the third place and championship game on Monday.

New to the U16 tournament this year will be a live stream of all the games played on the U16 Western Canadian Softball Championship Facebook page. Once the event is live, spectators will be able to follow the link found on the Facebook page. It will give them the option to pick what diamond they wish to watch.

“We’ve seen [the Facebook streams when] they hosted the U19 Westerns in Unity last year, so when we got awarded the U16 Westerns we made the call [to stream the games],” Dion Harrabek, head coach of the Biggar Nationals, said. “It has sort of become the norm for people who can’t travel from B.C. or Alberta or even in Saskatchewan so they can at least watch all the games.”

There will be a full concession booth and a guaranteed $500 50/50 raffle each day. Admissions to the games will be $10 for a day pass and $25 for the whole weekend.
