Third suspect in Tiki Laverdiere homicide investigation appears in court

Brent Checkosis waved to someone in the gallery as he left the prisoners box following his first court appearance on charges related to Tiki Brook-Lyn Laverdiere’s homicide investigation.

The 18-year-old was arrested the morning of July 25 and charged with accessory after the fact to murder, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle.

Checkosis was handed a no contact order for several individuals who may be co-accused or offer evidence in the case. He will return to court via closed-circuit television on Aug. 2.

The North Battleford man is the third person facing charges in connection to Laverdiere’s death. Earlier this week, 32-year-old Danita Thomas and Shayla Orthner, 27, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle.

They appeared in court this week and were similarly ordered to have no contact with several individuals. Both are due back in court on Aug. 2.

Laverdiere’s remains were found in a rural area outside of North Battleford on July 11. The Edmonton woman was reported missing on May 12 after coming to the area in late April to attend a funeral on the Thunderchild First Nation.

Krista Fox, who speaks for the family of missing woman Ashley Morin, has sat in the front row for all three court appearances. Morin has been missing for over one year. Both families have shown solidarity following the disappearance of both women.

Outside court, Fox said the back-to-back days of appearances makes her hurt for Laverdiere’s two sons and her mother Carol. However, she maintains she and others will continue to make the trek to provincial court for as long as they need to.

“Hopefully something will trigger and hopefully soon Ashley’s family will be able to get some sort of justice and find our girl and bring her home,” Fox said.
