RCMP look for community support for security camera network

Jul 24, 2019 | 1:36 PM

The neighborhood watch is moving into the digital age.

The City of North Battleford and the RCMP have asked members of the community to register their CCTV and security cameras with them to help counter crime in the city.

Registered members are asked to provide the location of their camera and what direction it is facing or what area it covers. If the RCMP thinks a crime was committed or a person of interest has passed through the area, they can then request the video from cameras that would have coverage of the area.

“If you have a camera with a view of the street and they believe that the person of interest was on that street at that time, then they will request the video to better understand where that person is going or who that person is,” Dustin MacDonald, communication administrator with North Battleford, said.

Registration of a camera does not give open access directly to the city or the RCMP; instead, they have to request the video on a per incident basis.

“If they request footage once, they don’t get automatic access in the future. It is per incident basis, they will just have knowledge of what you might be seeing,” MacDonald added. “You help the RCMP better identify the people they are looking for, what direction they are heading in, what vehicle they may be using, and a better idea of their physical characteristics.”

The RCMP hope that with enough support from the community, they will be able to have a fairly comprehensive surveillance network to use to identify, locate and pursue criminals in the city.

“The benefit to the community is that the RCMP will have better tools to apprehend these people who have committed crimes against your friends, neighbors or yourself,” MacDonald said.

Interested community members can register their cameras through the city’s website.
