Woman facing charges in death of Tiki Laverdiere appears in court

A North Battleford woman facing charges in relation to the death of Tiki Brook-Lyn Laverdiere appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court Tuesday.

Shayla Orthner, 27, who is in custody, is charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and theft of a motor vehicle.

Laverdiere’s remains were found in a rural area outside of North Battleford on July 11 by a police dog as part of an ongoing investigation.

Judge Lorna Dyck issued an order, listing about 25 names of individuals Orthner must not contact.

Orthner has yet to obtain legal counsel.

The case was adjourned to Friday, Aug. 2 at 11:30 a.m.

Following court, Crown prosecutor Chris Browne told reporters the reason Orthner was ordered to have no contact with so many people is because the RCMP investigation is ongoing.

“The Crown takes the position that certain individuals may either be potentially co-accused or offer material evidence on this matter,” he said. “Accordingly, we’ve sought the no contact [order] between the accused and those individuals in order to preserve justice.”

Krista Fox, a family friend of missing North Battleford woman Ashley Morin, attended court to show her solidarity for Laverdiere’s family.

“We’ve actually become really close with Carol [Laverdiere’s mother] and her family,” she said. “Unfortunately, due to everything happening so fast, Carol was unable to make it so we as Ashley’s family came to support Carol.”
