Danish Home Bakery vying for title of sweetest in Canada

Jul 22, 2019 | 5:17 PM

Every morning at 2:30 a.m., North Battleford’s Andy Thiell begins his workday at the Danish Home Bakery, rolling dough for the day ahead.

As the owner and operator, Thiell is joined not long after, and still well before dawn, by his mother at 3 a.m. and a fellow baker at 4 a.m., each joining in the dough artistry; tossing, rolling and patting the beginnings of what will become all kinds of bread, buns and pastries.

It is that daily dedication to their craft which has led to the Danish Home Bakery being nominated for the distinction of Sweetest Bakery in Canada.

The local establishment is one of 20 bakeries from around the province to be nominated. Danish Home Bakery is up against a number of others from across the nation competing for not only the title of sweetest, but a chance to win a round-trip for two to participate in a workshop with an executive pastry chef in Jackson, Michigan.

A family-run operation made up currently of just six people, the Danish Home Bakery has been a staple among locals for fresh baking in the Battlefords for the better part of the last 50-plus years, operating under a couple of different names.

The shop was established in 1962 by Thiell’s grandparents as Norwood Bakery. After the family sold the bakery, Thiell bought back the building in 1998 and has served as it’s owner and operator ever since.

Thiell said while it would certainly be great to win the contest, just being nominated is a great feeling for both he and his staff.

“This is the third year [of the competition], and we have been involved all three years,” he said. “For us, it is just nice to be nominated because it gives us recognition for what we’re doing here, and what we have been doing for the last 50 years.”
