The families of two missing people whose disappearances are considered suspicious have been contacted after human remains were found in a rural area outside North Battleford on Thursday.

Police said in a media release that North Battleford RCMP and the Major Crime Unit were conducting a ground search in relation to an ongoing investigation in a rural area outside of North Battleford on Thursday when a police dog discovered the remains.

An autopsy is scheduled for next week to confirm the identity.

A spokeswoman with the RCMP could not confirm the location of the search.

There are only two active suspicious missing persons investigations ongoing, according to the spokesperson, who confirmed that investigators are in contact with the families of both Ashley Morin and Tiki Brook-Lyn Laverdiere.

On Wednesday, one year after her disappearance, RCMP said they now believe Morin was the victim of homicide. The now 32-year-old has not been heard from or seen since July 10, 2018.

Laverdiere, 25, from Edmonton, was in the Thunderchild First Nation and North Battleford area for a funeral on April 27. She has not been heard or seen from since May 1.
