Battleford gearing up for annual parade

Jul 12, 2019 | 3:00 PM

Honking horns, cowboy hats and the click clack or horses’ hooves will once again fill the streets of Battleford when the town’s 36th annual parade kicks off next month.

“[Entries] have been coming in steadily,” Jordan Schechtel, the town’s parks and recreation director, said.

While several people have already registered, he is asking any individuals or groups that plan to participate to submit their entry forms.

“We really want to encourage people to get their entries in as soon as possible,” Schechtel said, adding the town hopes to see at least 50 registered in order for the event to be a success. “The more the better.”

People can enter their floats, decorated cars and trucks, horses, tractors, and just about anything they want to liven up the event.

Schechtel hopes there will be more music in the parade this time around, and encourages any groups or bands to take part, whether it be singers, choirs, or any other offering to make the parade more festive.

The town will once again allow people to store their floats in the arena in Battleford at no cost if they are planning to take part in the Northwest Territorial Days Parade in North Battleford on Aug. 13, following the Battleford parade.

“It’s first come, first served,” Schechtel said.

The town’s parade is set for Friday, Aug. 9, starting at 7 p.m.

The parade route will commence from St. Vital School, and travel along 22nd Street in the downtown core.

Following the parade at about 10 p.m. fireworks are planned on the field across from Fort Battleford.

Also on Aug. 9, the Fred Light Museum in Battleford is having an Old Fashioned Family Fun Day event that includes games, food and entertainment. A number of vendors will also participate.

“The museum and the community planned that because there will be more people in town,” Schechtel said.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Battlefords Vintage Auto Club Show and Shine will also be on the museum grounds during the day with a display of classic vehicles for auto buffs to take in.
