North Stars’ Buziak commits to York Lions for fall of 2019

North Stars forward Braydon Buziak has committed to the York University Lions for the 2019-20 season.

A native of Kindersley, Buziak moved to North Battleford with his family five years ago. He said the opportunity to win a championship in the community during his final year of Junior ‘A’ was special.

“This was an unbelievable year,” Buziak said. “I’ll never forget the memories, [and] I am very excited to continue playing [hockey] for the Lions while attending business school.”

In addition to his offensive prowess, Buziak also provided the Stars’ attack with grit and sandpaper. The power forward’s 165 penalty minutes were sixth-most in the SJHL this season. (Martin Martinson/battlefordsNOW Staff)

Buziak finished top-three in each primary offensive statistic on the North Stars this season as the forward’s 20 goals ranked third on the team. His 32 assists were second-best on the club. Buziak’s 52 points were third-most on the Stars.

In the playoffs, the belligerent power forward took his game to another level, leading the team in scoring with 19 points en route to the Stars’ Canalta Cup Championship.

In addition to the black-and-white production, Buziak featured as a primary weapon on each of the North Stars’ special teams’ units.

Buziak’s 10 power play points were second-most on the roster, while his three short-handed goals not only led the team, but were just two-back of the league-lead, too.

Head Coach of the North Stars Brayden Klimosko said in addition to the raw numbers, Buziak’s competitive spirit and leadership intangibles are what will likely be missed most.

“The bigger the game, the better he played,” Klimosko said. “That’s the one thing you always appreciate as a coach; you know when the game was on the line – if there was a game that we needed – we were going to see the best out of Braydon. He was a gamer, he competed, and the players on the team fed off that.”

Buziak finished his Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) career with 26 goals, 72 points in 113 career games. He also collected 16 goals, 30 points in 121 career Western Hockey League games, split between the Regina Pats and Victoria Royals.

Buziak joins a York University team that finished the 2018-19 campaign seventh in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) West Division with a 12-14-2 record through 28 games last season.
