WATER TOWER WATCH

Work underway to repair water tower leak

Jul 8, 2019 | 12:18 PM

Work is underway to repair the leak in North Battleford’s water tower.

It started shooting water into the street late Sunday morning.

A spokesperson for the city said the leak occurred near a previous repair spot on the tower.

The water levels were lowered to stop water from escaping and an outside contractor will patch the hole.

Residents can expect low water preassure until it is fixed and the tower is filled back up.

The leak forced the closure of roads around 12 Ave. and 105 St. as water puddled and ran down city streets.

The tower last sprung a leak in December 2012. That winter, emergency crews knocked a giant icicle off the side.

The water tower, which was built in 1949, is usually maintained at around six-point-two metres. At that level, it contains around 3,000 m3, or 790,000 gallons, of water. That is more than an Olympic sized swimming pool.
