Fun with French

Summer camp offers kids fun and games en français

While school is out for the summer, that doesn’t mean kids need to close the book on all they have learned until September.

Centre francophone des Battleford hopes to fill the gap with fun activities youngsters who understand some French can enjoy in a fully French-speaking environment.

The summer day-camp, called Camp Chaleureux, starting next week is aimed at children who have a little bit of prior French-language experience.

“We don’t want them to lose the French they have already practiced,” Jenny Kellgren said, from Centre francophone des Battleford, the event organizers. She said that’s why the non-profit organization offers the camp in the summer, so kids will have an opportunity to continue to use their French a little before returning to school at the end of the summer.

“Everything is in French, so we prefer children who have had a base in French,” she said. “It’s not a camp to learn French, but it’s a French camp.”

Participants will take part in a variety of sports at the camp, both indoors and outside, as well as make crafts, sing, play games and enjoy story time.

Camp Chaleureux is open to children ages five to 10. The Camp runs for three weeks from July 8 to 26, Mondays to Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., based out of École Monseigneur Blaise Morand School in North Battleford. Registration fees for the event are on a per-week basis. Parents can pay in advance or when they drop off their child at the camp.
