Rock the Village kicks off this weekend

Music, laughs and community comradery – that’s the backdrop for this weekend’s Rock the Village celebration July 6 at the North Battleford Village.

Running from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, the event will feature a number of local artists, with eight bands from the area set to perform including Red Blaze, Putt Putt’s Garage, Kolton and Friends, Dwayne Lewis, Miles as Elvis, Lori Wuttunee, Gipsy Moonbird, and Midnight Run.

Community Manager with the Village Michelle Dubyk, who organized the event, said the function offers a platform for local musicians from the region to be heard, while also giving those who attend a fresh look at The Village as a fun, welcoming place to be.

“It’s a great way to support the local talent,” Dubyk said. “At the same time, another reason to have it here is to show people how our community has improved. North Battleford Village had a bad name many years ago, [and] people were not proud to say they were from here, but Cove Communities has really revitalized this place [over the last few years], and made it a wonderful place to be.”

In addition to the concerts flowing continuously throughout the afternoon and evening, Rock the Village will also feature entertainment for the children including face painting, a bouncy castle, and sweets including cotton candy and candy apples.

Dubyk said it was important to make the gathering a family-friendly event for people of all ages.

“Our village here has a lot of children in the community, so it was important to have something for the kids to enjoy,” she said. “Parents can bring their kids along, and know that they’ll also have a good time.”

About 500 people are expected at the event its inaugural year. Dubyk said she hopes that with a good turnout, Rock the Village can become an annual occurrence.

Canteen will be available at the event with hamburgers and hotdogs on the menu. All proceeds will be donated toward the Battlefords Humane Society.
