They say there’s nothing quite like home cooking.

The Battleford Beavers 11-U AA team won their home tournament this weekend. Twelve teams from around the province attended the Tier 1 tournament.

The Beavers’ weekend began with a 9-9 tie in their first game of Round Robin play against the Lloydminster AA2 Twins Friday.

Saturday, the team picked up victories in each of their two games, defeating both the Humboldt Dodgers 15-2, and Saskatoon Double A’s 24-2 on the second day of action.

Heading into the playoff rounds Sunday, the Beavers narrowly edged out a win over the Lloydminster AA1 Twins 15-12 in the semifinals, to advance to the ‘A’ Final against the Lloydminster AA2 Twins.

Saving their best for when the spotlight was the brightest, the Beavers came up strong on the bats, and equally stingy in the outfield, scoring 10 runs while allowing only 4, to take home the tournament gold.

With the victories, the Beavers hold an 8-4-1 record on the season.

Head coach Ryan Muyers said he attributes a lot of the team’s success over the weekend to their aggressive approach on the home diamond.

“This weekend we started swinging the bats a bit more and started hitting pitches,” he said. “The team started being a bit more aggressive on the bats and more aggressive on the base paths. [We also] definitely received some exceptionally strong pitching.”

That added assertiveness is something Muyers said plays to the team’s strengths as a group that picks their spots well and can make plays with their speed.

“We’re a bit of a quicker team,” he said. “We don’t have as many power bats, but we’re finding lots of holes and stretching singles into doubles.”

The Beavers have two exhibition games remaining on the schedule and two tournaments left in Lloydminster and Meadow Lake in lead up to provincials.
