Pancake Breakfast a celebration of First Nations’ Culture

Food, community and a celebration of heritage will come together next month on National indigenous Peoples Day.

The Battle River Treaty Six Pancake Breakfast will take place Fri., June 21, from 8 to 11 a.m.

Member of the planning committee, Abigail Kapting’ei, said there is a lot to look forward to within the event.

“It is an opportunity to eat, have some fun, and connect with people from all over North Battleford and surrounding communities,” she said.

In addition to the breakfast itself, the event will also feature presentations by the chiefs and mayors.

An outing for the whole family to enjoy, for the children, there will be entertainment as well. There will be various games, face painting; and a balloon man among the activities.

An annual event that has proven itself to be a staple within the Battlefords community over the last decade, Kapting’ei said the gathering is a good way to have fun, while also serving an important purpose within bringing the community and surrounding area together.

“This is a free event open to the public to celebrate Indigenous Peoples and culture,” she said. “It’s an opportunity for the community members to spend time with recognized role models, and decision makers in our city and our communities.”

Among the entertainment will be musical performances provided by a number of groups including traditional Indigenous drumming groups; and local area musicians, such as “Boss of Three,” a young aboriginal band from Cochin.

Between 1800 and 2000 people attend the breakfast annually, with similar numbers expected once again this year.

In addition to the breakfast, this July will mark the 40thanniversary of the the Battle River Treaty Six Health Centre.
