Canadian Lakes Loon Survey Volunteers Needed

Get involved with the Canadian Lakes Loon Survey in Prince Albert National Park!

It provides the public with an opportunity to conduct citizen science. Visitors who want to connect with nature and have an interest in ecosystem health are encouraged to get involved on lakes across Canada.

“All you need is to be able to recognize a common loon and a small commitment of your time,” said Resource Management Officer Shannon Poppy and coordinator of the Loon Survey Volunteer Project for Prince Albert National Park. “This is a unique opportunity for nature lovers to get on the lakes and enjoy what the park has to offer while contributing to a national study.”

There are 11 lakes within the national park and one lake just outside the park boundary that are identified for the study. Prince Albert National Park resource management officers will provide instruction and assistance to those interested in getting participating. Volunteers are asked to count the number of common loons they see during their scouting trips. With its black and white plumage, large profile and haunting calls, loons are easy to distinguish.

“I am concerned about the loons on lakes like McPhee where boat activity has increased. Last year, we did observe four to five pairs nesting by McPhee Lake and there were four surviving young that we could see. In 2016 and 2017, there were no young observed,” said Lynn Gorecki, loon survey participant.
