N.B. proceeds with airport runway upgrades, parking lot work

The airport in North Battleford will see more upgrades to its main runway this year.

But since the city didn’t receive anticipated provincial funding, the project will be scaled back from what was originally planned in 2019.

The Cameron McIntosh Airport upgrade is one of the city’s 2019 capital works projects. At city hall Monday night, council approved the lowest of three tenders received from Battleford firm K&S Asphalt Services Ltd. at $1.94 million for various projects that involve road work.

For the airport runway resurfacing, a full $550,000 was budgeted, but now, just $275,000 is earmarked as the city missed out on funds from Regina.

“We’ll just do half as much as we wanted to do,” Mayor Ryan Bater said. “When we are signing the contract, we will amend the scope of work to include the new amount for the runway.”

Nonetheless, Bater said the city is grateful for the province’s past contributions to the project.

“They have been working with us for the past several years to rehabilitate our runway,” he said. “I’m hopeful for the future. It’s just this wasn’t our year, but we will continue because we are committed to making the Cameron McIntosh Airport as useful and friendly for pilots as possible.”

The mayor said the runway in its former state was at the end of its useful life and had to be rehabilitated.

“This was a need, so we need to continue,” Bater said, adding he hopes to have the project completed by the end of next year.

The city’s other projects planned as part of the contract work include several Underground Pipeline and Asphalt Rehabilitation (UPAR) projects: rehabilitating 100 St. from 11 Ave. to 12 Ave, following a design similar to 101 St., consistent with the city’s downtown master plan.

This will come alongside the Cured In Place Pipe (CIPP) Sewer Lining installation, 113 St. rehabilitation work south of 13 Ave., and work on Foley Dr. from 19 Ave. to Thomas Ave.

Further, the city will develop the King Street Station parking lot beside the new cinema on 11 Ave.

Three separate contracts will be needed to cover these projects.
