Juno Award winner on road to the Battlefords

Canadian musician Joey Landreth is coming to the Battlefords’ Dekker Centre June 6.

Landreth, who grew up in Winnipeg, said the performance will mark a return to the Prairies and to the Battlefords, where he has played more than once.

The prospect of coming back to perform just a province over from his hometown is one the singer/songwriter is very much looking forward to, calling the Dekker Centre, “a really beautiful venue, with some really great people running it.”

Landreth, who considers himself a guitar player by trade, first began playing when he was eight. Following his passion, it didn’t take long for Landreth to begin working professionally as a musician. He started touring at 15 and hasn’t stopped chasing his dream.

“My dad was a musician and my mom is an avid music lover, who plays as well,” Landreth said. “I grew up around musicians. If it wasn’t my dad directly, then it was his friends that were around and so [while] some kids wanted to be a paramedic, or a firefighter, or a pilot, I just always wanted to be a musician.”

Because he was still in high school when he began touring, Landreth said during his early years on the road, the trips were mostly constrained to the weekend. The agreement with his parents included missing the odd Monday or Friday at school if need be, so long as he didn’t fall behind on his class work.

After working for other people for about 10 years, Landreth started a band with his brother Dave called The Brothers (Bros.) Landreth.

In 2015 their album, Let it Lie earned them the Juno Award for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year.

Following the success of the band, Ladreth released his debut solo record, Whiskey, in early 2017. These days, Landreth tours consistently with both his solo project and with The Brothers Landreth.

Landreth’s upcoming trip to the Battlefords comes as a stop on his current tour in support of the release of his second solo album, titled Hindsight, which was released on April 19.

As for what people can expect at his show, Landreth said harmony singing and guitar solos are just some of what’s in store, with versatility providing the true bedrock of the performance.

“I wouldn’t call it a jam-band, but there are moments when it kind of gets there,” he said. “There are also moments that really focus in on the song. There’s moments when it’s loud and rocky, and then it’s quiet and sensitive; moments when the band will step off the stage and I’ll play a couple songs by myself, and where the band and I just sort of go on musical adventures, it’s a pretty diverse show.”
