A Great Celebration

A Taste of Culture coming soon to the Battlefords

May 26, 2019 | 10:04 AM

The Battlefords Immigration Resource Centre is hosting A Taste of Culture Friday, May 31 to June 1 at the Western Development Museum.

A Taste of Culture is an annual event designed to celebrate different cultures of people throughout the region through the means of unique food, entertainment, and lifestyle.

Annette McGovern, executive director for the Battlefords Immigration Resource Centre, called the celebration, “a really educational event for the whole community that’s always very well received.”

The event will commence following a citizenship ceremony beginning Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. with just over 100 immigrants of various cultural backgrounds coming together to receive their certification as new Canadian citizens.

The celebratory festivities will include various forms of entertainment. With bright decorations, and activities for the kids such as face painting, and balloon art, there will also be marketplace tables featuring a diverse spread of cultural foods available for purchase.

Continuing to grow since the celebration was first held in the Battlefords over a decade ago, the event now tends to bring in about 5,400 people annually.

McGovern said watching people come together and join in celebration of one-another’s backgrounds at A Taste of Culture, is something she looks forward to each year.

“Everybody shares what they know about their culture and then they realize that everybody else’s culture isn’t all that different from their own,” McGovern said. “It seems to unite people [and] create some understanding and cohesion in the community.”

McGovern went on to say the event can serve as both educational and entertaining for people of all ages.

“It’s a great education for the children, for sure, to get out and see different things, and it’s a real eye-opener for some of the adults in the community [too],” she said. “It’s just amazing to see how well cultures can work together at an event like this.”

A Taste of Culture will run from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday May 31st, and continue Saturday June 1st from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Western Development Museum in North Battleford.
