Battlefords’ cannabis shops even greener with recycling program

May 24, 2019 | 5:05 PM

Cannabis users in the Battlefords no longer have to fret over the abundance of plastic waste accompanying their products.

Both 5 Buds and Fire & Flower cannabis outlets have partnered with Tweed and TerraCycle to house recycling bins for any cannabis packaging adorned with the red THC logo.

“It was a major ask from customers right from the beginning on Oct. 17,” Fire & Flower’s Director of Merchandising Annie Do said.

The packaging and label requirements from Health Canada have driven the need for the larger packaging, Do said, and while understanding and welcoming of the strict regulations, the company quickly heard concerns from consumers.

“When Canopy came to us with this program, we immediately jumped on it because we needed to see something like that in our shops,” she added. “It was something for our customers to feel confident when they are purchasing cannabis that there is an outlet for them to recycle.”

Immediately after installing the bins, Do said the response from shoppers was overwhelmingly positive.

“In one of our shops someone came in with their own garbage bag full of containers,” she said. “We want to encourage people to have safe consumption but at the same time to respect the environment.”

The process of recycling is simple; drop in the outer and inner packaging, tins, joint tubes and plastic bottles and caps. TerraCycle takes the plastic, melts it down into tiny pellets and uses it to make new products.
