More students are now on-board with the Better Together campaign following help offered by some generous youth from North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS).

The NBCHS Me to We club members recently donated funds they had raised to purchase Better Together T-shirts for six grades at Lawrence Elementary School, so more kids could get involved in the campaign.

The Better Together project was started in January with the aim to bring younger and older generations together. Grade 12 student Allysa Woodrow had the idea for the initiative. On Tuesdays people taking part in the campaign wear their Better Together T-shirts that serve as a type of conversation starter, to improve communication among different age groups and boost everyone’s mental health at the same time.

Kelly Waters, NBCHS Me to We club teacher-facilitator, said initially the students in the club thought only one grade at Lawrence school needed funds for the shirts. After learning that only one grade actually had the shirts, the Me to We club youth decided to fund T-shirts for the rest of the Lawrence school students, so all the Lawrence School students could have their own Better Together T-shirts.

Ultimately, the Me to We Club – a social justice group at NBCHS, donated close to $2,000 for the project. All Out Graphics also helped with the effort.

Waters was thrilled to see the Me to We club kids be proactive, to help other youth participate in the Better Together project.

“It fits in with the theme of everyone’s lives being entwined, and we are all better together,” said Waters.

Waters added she is a strong believer in the Better Together program.

“I think it’s beautiful,” she said. “It’s raising awareness about mental health, community, and building relationships between all demographics.”

Lawrence Elementary School Principal Christine Gibson said the T-shirts for all the Kindergarten to Gr. 6 students will be well used. She expressed her appreciation for all the Me to We club students for their support.

“It’s so generous of the (NBCHS) kids to think of the school,” she said. “It’s allowing us to do really neat things with our groupings here at the school. I’m glad they thought of us.”

Gibson said the Lawrence School senior students will work with the junior classes on different projects while wearing their Better Together T-shirts. Students can choose their own T-Shirts with one of four different images. For example, students wearing a Better Together T-shirt with a salt and pepper design will work together on an outdoor clean-up project, and so on.
