Battlefords RCMP lay 207 charges within National Impaired Driving Week campaign

It was a busy week for the Battlefords RCMP.

The detachment participated in the National Impaired Driving Week enforcement campaign, and in two-stop checks conducted at peak times they stopped over 500 vehicles. Of the 500 vehicles, 207 charges were laid. Of those, 199 were laid under the Traffic Safety Act and four additional charges were laid under criminal code violations.

Battlefords RCMP Staff Sgt. Darcy Woolfitt said that the numbers were what they were expecting, which is a good stance from their outlook.

“I think what we saw was average for the results that we’ve had for Impaired Driving week. I think that the message is getting out there,” he said. “In that respect, the results are fairly positive.”

During the campaign, 14 investigations into impaired driving were conducted, with two resulting in two separate persons being charged for impaired driving by alcohol. A number of driving suspensions were also handed out among the stops.

Along with the stop checks, there was an educational side of the Impaired Driving Week enforcement campaign. When it comes to working on the knowledge side, Woolfitt said there was a big push on the drivers that are just hitting the road.

“It’s critical in changing people’s behaviours and attitudes towards impaired driving, and our focus on the education components is on our young drivers,” he said.

When it comes to the 199 charges laid under the Traffic Safety Act, the Battlefords RCMP said in a press release that the majority of those were speeding, along with distracted driving.
